American Idols

One of the lowest things that we as human beings stoop down to is following idols.  The Bible is literally full of instances where people go to stupid lengths to worship them.

Genesis 31:30

New Living Translation (NLT)

30 I can understand your feeling that you must go, and your intense longing for your father’s home. But why have you stolen my gods?”

Jacob’s father-in-law was an idol worshiper. When Jacob fled from Laban with Rachel, she stole his household gods and even went as far as to sit on them so that he would not find them.  This is just one example of how dedicated people were to their idols in the Old Testament.

That was then, but this is now.

Actual wooden idols from Old Testament times

Laban admitted that the sticks and rocks he was looking for were his gods. — Today in our society we have idols as well… and we might as well admit it.  Sports, celebrities, our jobs, ANYTHING that we place above our devotion to the creator is simply that… an idol.  I’ve met pastors who have made their churches and ministries into idols.  I’ve met power hungry people that have made the approval of man into idols.  Money- oh yeah… you get it now… the list goes on.

Laban’s “gods” couldn’t prevent themselves from theft nor from being sat on. They couldn’t proclaim their presence to the one searching either. — Today, none of these things that we have made into idols can bring peace, fill the emptiness, or make any positive difference in our lives.  Yes Jesus longs to fill us with His presence, peace and make us whole.

Very shortly before this incident with Laban, the true and Living God had spoken to Laban (GEN 31:24), but even still Laban still came running after his idols.  —It is SO easy to fall back into the trap of idol worship even though we know our Father is real.   We all have stories of how we have worried about things more than we’ve taken them to God.

The only way to describe idolatry is to call it what it is… it is demonic.  It is Satan using other things to distract you from the main thing.  Evil spirits lurk behind these idols waiting to ensnare you with their scaly fingers.  Open your eyes and realize what is happening.

Psalm 106:36-38

New Living Translation (NLT)

36 They worshiped their idols,
which led to their downfall.
37 They even sacrificed their sons
and their daughters to the demons.
38 They shed innocent blood,
the blood of their sons and daughters.
By sacrificing them to the idols of Canaan,
they polluted the land with murder.

Are we willing to sacrifice our families to idols?  Think before you answer.

In the words of Kevin Young of the Christian Band Disciple, “Take my- Break my golden calf down.”

Truth wins!

  1. good stuff.. 3 alliterated points….I’m impressed. 😛

  2. We all have idols that need broken and ground down. Sometimes we don’t even realize what we are treating like an idol. The key is can you give it up and put God first? If you have a tendancy to choose it over a God activity, then watch out! Idol has been born. God should be number one in our lives and we should be following Him alone.

  3. Scott, your blog is refreshing. Keep up the good work! Today was a reminder to me about my kids’ screen time…thanks b/c it’s important to me to train my kids in the right way. Hope you and yours are well.
