JEDI: Jesus Every Day Illuminated, Part 1: Alien-Nation

A few years back, I visited a most bizarre place.  Far into the middle of the desert of New Mexico, there is an obscure little town called Roswell.  Upon arrival, it didn’t take long before I realized that this could be one of the most unusual places I had ever been to.

Roswell’s claim to fame is that its name is attached to what is known as “The 1947

International UFO Museum, Roswell, New Mexico

Roswell UFO Incident.”  On July 8th, 1947, the local newspaper reported that members of the 509th Bomb Group division of the US Armed Forces had recovered the remains of a flying disc from a nearby ranch.

The debate has been intense with strong arguments on both sides of the issue regarding exactly what happened that summer in the desert.  The town of Roswell, itself, has embraced their “alien” culture and has become a mecca of sorts for thousands who visit every year, gazing in to the night sky, hoping for a glimpse of what could be from another world.

Allow me to submit to you a simple fact.  We come into contact with beings from another world on a daily basis.  In fact, if you are a follower of Christ, you are an alien yourself. Some years back, a pioneering Christian rock band called Petra, released a song entitled, Not of this World.  The lyrics of their song say it quite clearly.

With each passing day it seems so clear
This world will never want us here
We're not welcome in this world of wrong
We are foreigners who don't belong
We are strangers, we are aliens
We are not of this world

We are in a place that we do not belong.  Our surroundings are only temporary.  There are people that we come in contact with everyday that wonder what the difference is in our lives because they sense that we are strange but they can’t comprehend what the difference is.

1 Peter 2:11

11 Dear friends, I warn you as “temporary residents and foreigners” to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls!

It is difficult trying to survive in a world that we do not belong in.  This Alien Nation that we belong to often is accompanied by alienation.  Many times we will find ourselves alone.  More and more common is the blatant persecution we receive because of our faith.  Jesus, our leader, knows what we are going through and He warned us that men would hate us.   But He has given us a promise.

John 16:33 (NLT)

33 I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.

John 15:18-19 (NLT)

18 “If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first.19 The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world. I chose you to come out of the world, so it hates you.

John 14:3  (NLT)

When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.

So we have His promise that soon He will come take us to our real home and our departure is imminent.

Be encouraged.  Your home is being prepared for you.

Be patient. Your time here and your trials here are only temporary.

Be aware.  You are surrounded by people who need you to take them to your leader.  Show them that you may be different, but that is not be a bad thing!

Truth wins!

  1. Scott, this is a great post. Heck, you ought to try living in a land where they don’t comprehend a word you are saying! I really am an ailen here. I will learn the language soon enough, though. It is here about like it is there, too much empathy. I will do all I can to reach some, though. I kind of like the culture, but it is so alien to what I am accustomed to in the USA. No one gets in a hurry here. It can be frustrating, but I will adapt. Deus abencoe!!
